Description
Priority Announcements offer additional sources of funding for highly rated applications that are relevant to specific CIHR research priority areas or mandates. Applications are submitted through the "201611MFE" competition of the Fellowship: 2016‑2017 funding opportunity.
Funds Available
CIHR's contribution to the amount available for this initiative is subject to availability of funds voted annually to CIHR by parliamentary appropriations. Should CIHR funding levels be decreased by Parliament, CIHR reserves the right to defer or suspend payments to grants received as a result of this funding opportunity.
In this competition, funds are available to encourage and support applications in specific areas that are aligned with CIHR's research priority areas and mandates. Objectives
The specific objective of the Fellowship Priority Announcement (Specific Research Areas) is to offer additional sources of funding for highly rated applications that are relevant to specific CIHR research priority areas and mandates.
CIHR Research Priority Areas
Clinical Nutrition (CNU)
Summary
The CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD) in partnership with the Canadian Nutrition Society (CNS), will provide funding for applications that are determined to be relevant to the research priority area as described below:
- clinical nutrition, in the area of enteral nutrition and patient outcomes.
- More information on the research priorities of CIHR-INMD and CNS can be found on their website.
Funds Available
- The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $600,000, enough to fund approximately two awards. This amount may increase if additional funding partners or internal collaborators decide to participate.
- The maximum amount awarded for a single award is $60,000 per annum for up to five (5) years.
Specific Requirements
NOTE: BY APPLYING TO THIS RESEARCH PRIORITY AREA, CANDIDATES AGREE THAT THEIR FULL APPLICATIONS BE SHARED WITH PARTNER(S).
- Applicants must be:
- a medical graduate registered in a fellowship program in Canada; or
- have completed a PhD degree and be engaged in post-doctoral research related to nutrition.
- A relevance form must be completed indicating the research program relevance to the mission of the Canadian Nutrition Society, and more specifically to clinical nutrition, in the area of enteral nutrition (specifically tube feeding and oral nutrition support) and patient outcomes.
- Medical graduates must have completed clinical residency training in a recognized adult or pediatric training program (inside or outside of Canada) to the extent that they are eligible (or equivalent) to write Royal College certification exams at the time of starting the award.
- Successful applicants must register and become CNS members.
- The supervisor must be a CNS member in good standing at the time of application or have applied to become a CNS member.
- The award must be held in Canada.
- Fellows must attend CNS Annual Conference each year to share results from their research project with other Fellows and stakeholders, however, additional funds to cover the costs of attendance will not be provided.
- Yearly update reports (submitted within one month of the first and second year anniversary, as well as a final report on the work accomplished during the fellowship must be submitted to CNS within two (2) months of completion of the award.

Drug Safety and Effectiveness (FDS)
Summary
CIHR, through the Drug Safety and Effectiveness Network (DSEN) initiative will provide funding for clinical research that is relevant to the DSEN mandate.
DSEN addresses gaps in information on the safety and effectiveness of Prescription Drugs used by Canadians in the real-world. Research involving Over-the-counter Drugs, Medical Devices and Natural Health Products (including vitamins and minerals, herbal remedies, homeopathic medicines, traditional medicines such as traditional Chinese medicines, probiotics, and other products such as amino acids and essential fatty acids) will not be considered relevant to this funding opportunity.

- The maximum amount awarded for a single award is $60,000 per annum for up to five years.
Specific Requirements
- A relevance form must be completed indicating the research program relevance to the mandate of DSEN. The proposed clinical research must address safety and/or effectiveness of prescription drugs used by Canadians in the real-world. Research involving Over-the-counter Drugs, Medical Devices and Natural Health Products will not be considered relevant to this funding opportunity.
- The award must be held in Canada.
- Award recipients will become a DSEN collaborating researcher; this means that they may be required to participate in activities that support DSEN, such as advisory committees and/or Knowledge Translation events organized by the DSEN Coordinating Office.

Gastroenterology (FGA)
Summary
- The CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD) in partnership with Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG) will provide funding for applications that are determined to be relevant to the research priority areas as described below:
- applications that relate specifically to biomedical or clinical research related to Gastroenterology that will contribute to building increased Canadian research capacity in the field.

Funds Available
- The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $240,000, enough to fund approximately two (2) awards. This amount may increase if additional funding partners or internal collaborators decide to participate.
- The maximum amount awarded for a single award is $60,000 per annum for up to two (2) years.
Specific Requirements
NOTE: BY APPLYING TO THIS RESEARCH PRIORITY AREA, CANDIDATES AGREE THAT THEIR FULL APPLICATIONS BE SHARED WITH PARTNER(S).
- This Priority Announcement will require the completion of a Relevance Form.
- Applicants must ensure that their relevance form addresses the following points:
- A short statement explaining how the proposed research will strengthen Canadian gastroenterology research;
- The supervisor must be a CAG Regular Member in good standing for at least 3 years at the time of application;
- If the Fellowship is undertaken outside of Canada, candidates must clearly explain their rationale for pursuing training outside of Canada and how they foresee returning to an academic position in Canada.
- Applicants must be:
- a medical graduate registered in a fellowship program in Canada; or
- have completed a PhD degree and be engaged in post-doctoral research related to gastroenterology or nutrition.

Kidney Disease (KDP)
Summary
- The CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD) in partnership with the Kidney Foundation of Canada (KFOC) will provide funding for applications that are determined to be relevant to the research priority areas as described below:
- biomedical, clinical, health services or population research related to Kidney disease that will contribute to building increased Canadian research capacity in the field.

Funds Available
- The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $600,000, enough to fund approximately two (2) awards. This amount may increase if additional funding partners or internal collaborators decide to participate.
- The maximum amount awarded for a single award is $60,000 per annum for up to five (5) years.
Specific Requirements
- A relevance form must be completed indicating the research program’s relevance to the mission and vision of the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
- Applications for training in clinical research will be considered only if it is clear from the application that at least 80% of the applicant’s time and effort will be devoted to the research project(s) and clinical activities upon which the research project(s) is immediately dependent. This information must be included in the relevance form.
- Applicants must be:
- Canadian citizens or landed immigrants at the time of submission of their application.
- Under the supervision of investigators holding an academic appointment and in areas of investigation where it is clear that the research has direct relevance to kidney disease. The training program must include involvement in actual research, and not only courses in research methods.
- If the Fellowship is undertaken outside of Canada, candidates must clearly explain their rationale for pursuing training outside of Canada and how they foresee returning to an academic position in Canada.
- Candidates with more than four years of Post-PhD research training by the competition deadline are not eligible to apply for this award; however, any interruption in a candidate’s Post-PhD research training will be taken into account in determining eligibility. Candidates who have had an interruption in their post-PhD research training career must provide a brief statement outlining the duration of and reason for the interruption in the relevance form.
- Applicants with a MD degree must hold license in Canada or be enrolled in a program leading to certification in Canada at the time of applying for this award.
- Successful participants must participate in the KRESCENT core curriculum (please see www.krescent.ca for more information).

Refugee Training Initiative (RTA) (Updated: 2016-08-16)
Summary
- The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) will provide funding to support Post - Doctoral Fellowship Awards open to Refugees that have arrived in Canada since September 2014.

Should CIHR funding not be available or be decreased due to unforeseen circumstances, CIHR reserves the right to reduce, defer or suspend financial contributions to awards received as a result of this funding opportunity.

- The maximum amount awarded for a single award is $45,000 per annum for up to 3 years.
Specific Requirements
- This Priority Announcement will not require the completion of a Relevance Form.
- The award must be held in Canada.
- This Priority Announcement requires the submission of an electronic Final Report to CIHR within two (2) months of completion of the award.
- In order to be eligible for this award the applicant must be a refugee living in Canada that has arrived since September 2014. Privately sponsored, Government sponsored, and Blended Visa Office-Referred refugees will be eligible to apply for this award.
- Applicants must provide proof of refugee status and date of entry into Canada.

Review Process and Evaluation
Relevance Review Process
CIHR Research Priority Areas
CIHR and partner organizations will provide funding for applications that are relevant to (in alignment with) the objectives and research priority areas described under "CIHR Research Priority Areas" within the "Objectives" section.
Prior to peer review, CIHR and partner organizations will have access to project titles and project summaries and/or relevance forms (if applicable).
Applications that are not deemed to be relevant will be withdrawn from the Priority Announcement competition, but will continue to be considered for funding through the Fellowship: 2016‑2017 funding opportunity.
The following criteria will be used in conducting the relevance review:
- Alignment of the objectives of the proposed activity with the specific objectives of the CIHR Institute, Initiative, Branch and/or partners offering funding through the Priority Announcement Funding Opportunity.
Peer Review
Peer review committees will not be informed of applications submitted for funding through this announcement.

Funding Decision
Upon completion of peer review, CIHR will generate a ranking list, ratings and recommendations. The list will be used for funding decision-making purposes.
Within each Priority Announcement competition, applications will be funded from the top down in order of ranking as far as budgets will allow.
