‘Our hearts and prayers are with the victims of the horrific mass shooting’

June 13, 2016 —

The Pride flag outside University Centre on the University of Manitoba campus will be at half-mast to remember the victims of the shooting at a gay nightclub in Florida.

“The Pride flag flown on campus recently for Pride Week will be raised again at half-mast as we express our condolences and stand with communities around the world opposed to hatred,” said President and Vice-Chancellor David Barnard.

The shooting massacre killed 49 victims inside Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Fla. on the weekend.

“Our hearts and prayers are with the victims of the horrific mass shooting in Orlando and their families,” said Barnard.

Vice-President (External) John Kearsey also voiced support for the families.

“I tried sitting in front of the television and watching the Orlando coverage. I simply cannot. Instead, I am sitting and praying for the families and friends who are grieving right now. Praying for those persecuted for their sexuality, faith, skin colour,” said Kearsey. “I’m praying for peace.”

Pride Winnipeg will hold a vigil Monday, June 13, evening at the Manitoba legislature at 8:30 p.m.

The University of Manitoba encourages and supports a climate of respect in the workplace and in the learning environment where individuals or groups of individuals are free from harassment and discrimination on the basis of ancestry, sexual orientation, religion, age or disability.
