- The goal of this priority announcement is to enable the OHTN to support New Investigators conducting solution-focused, scientifically rigorous, community-engaged, multi-disciplinary HIV research that is highly relevant to one or more of the populations in Ontario most affected by HIV:
- people living with HIV;
- gay men and other men who have sex with men;

- This priority announcement will provide funding for applications that demonstrate relevance to the Policy, and that have the potential to have an impact on people living with and affected by HIV in Ontario within 2-5 years. We are particularly interested in funding people who are using a program science / implementation science framework and approach, developing and testing interventions, “solving” problems, and doing work to influence new / adapt existing programs, services and policies for persons affected by HIV in Ontario.
- Investigators funded through this program are expected to work collaboratively with other OHTN stakeholders (people living with and affected by HIV, front-line community-based agencies, health care providers, scientists, health planners and government decision-makers) where appropriate, to enhance Ontario’s research leadership, health systems and health services.
- Applications to the OHTN priority announcement are sought in two distinct funding pools: Biomedical/Clinical Research and Health Services/Population Health Research. Applicants must select the most relevant funding pool in the drop-down menu of the priority announcement.

- The CIHR Institute of Aboriginal Peoples' Health (IAPH) fosters the advancement of a national health research agenda to improve and promote the health of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples in Canada, through research, knowledge translation and capacity building. The Institute's pursuit of research excellence is enhanced by respect for community research priorities and Indigenous knowledge, values and cultures.
- More information on the research priorities of CIHR-IAPH can be found on their website.
Funds Available
- The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $600,000, enough to fund two (2) awards. This amount may increase if additional funding partners or internal collaborators decide to participate.
- The maximum amount awarded for a single award is $60,000 per annum for up to five (5) years.
Specific Requirements
- This Priority Announcement will require the completion of a Relevance Form.
- Within the Relevance Form the applicant must demonstrate:
- a close working relationship with a First Nations, Métis or Inuit organisation or community; and,
- how their lived “Indigenous Lived Experience” will enhance their approach to research.*
- Successful applicants may be required to budget funds to attend and actively participate in IAPH activities, such as a yearly research meeting to advance Indigenous health research.

Review Process and Evaluation
Relevance Review
CIHR and partner organizations will provide funding for applications that are relevant to (in alignment with) the objectives and research priority areas described in the "Objectives" section.
Prior to peer review, CIHR and partner organizations will have access to project titles and project summaries and/or relevance forms.
Applications that are not deemed to be relevant will be withdrawn from the competition.
Peer Review
A CIHR review committee will evaluate the full applications. The committee may be drawn from one of CIHR's pre-existing committees or may be created specifically for this funding opportunity. Committee members are selected based on suggestions from many sources including the institute(s) / branch(es) and partner(s), following the Conflict of Interest and Confidentiality Policy of the Federal Research Funding Organizations. For information on CIHR's peer review process in general, see the Understand Peer Review section of CIHR's website.
Evaluation Criteria
New Investigator Salary Awards are reviewed in accordance with the CIHR Peer Review Manual for Salary Award Applications.
The following standard criteria for evaluating applications will apply:
- Applicant Track Record
- Research Plan
- Environment and Support
Note that reviewers will evaluate if the candidate has shown promise to become an independent researcher.
If the applicant does not hold current operating funds, internal and external reviews as well as the summary of discussion from the applicant's submission for a CIHR operating grant (or equivalent), submitted as part of the New Investigator application package, will be used to assist in the evaluation of the New Investigator Salary Award application.
Funding Decision
Upon completion of peer review, we will generate a ranking list, ratings and recommendations. The list will be used for funding decision-making purposes and will remain anonymous unless applicants have provided written consent to share nominative information.
Applications will be funded from the top down in order of ranking as far as budgets will allow.
Applications that receive a rating below 3.5 will not be funded.
