Description
CIHR's mandate is to excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge and its translation into improved health, more effective health services and products, and a strengthened health care system.
CIHR integrates research through a unique interdisciplinary structure made up of 13 virtual Institutes. The Institutes are networks of researchers and stakeholders brought together to focus on important health problems, with each Institute dedicated to a specific area of focus, linking and supporting researchers pursuing common goals.
One of the mechanisms for the Institutes to achieve their mandates is by offering Planning and/or Dissemination grants within the Institute Community Support (ICS) Program.
Planning and Dissemination Grants are intended to provide support for planning and/or dissemination activities consistent with the mandate of CIHR and relevant to CIHR Institutes, or Initiatives.
Each of the participating Institutes/Initiatives has tailored this funding opportunity to meet the needs of their respective communities. Please view the Sponsor Description section for specific details and funds available.

Partner and Internal Collaborator Participation
CIHR is dedicated to identifying and developing collaborations with other funding organizations and stakeholders to enhance the availability of funding for this strategic initiative, and to create, where appropriate, opportunities for knowledge exchange and translation related to the scope of this particular initiative. Applicants are invited to visit the Partner and Internal Collaborators Description sections to find a list of partners, internal collaborators and their respective mandates and/or strategic interests. The specific research foci and requirements for each partner and internal collaborator are outlined in the “Objectives” section.
The opportunity to add new partners and internal collaborators to this funding opportunity may arise after publication. These partners and internal collaborators may not be listed, however, the principles that govern relevance review and funding decisions will still apply in these cases; see Review Process and Evaluation. Note: Where new partners and internal collaborators are added later in the competition, the partners and internal collaborators will conduct relevance reviews based on their respective mandates on all applications in this competition without reference to peer review results. Applications deemed to be relevant will be funded from the top down as far as the budgets will allow.

Relevant Research Areas
Events/activities may focus on, but are not limited to, the following:
Planning:
- Activities that assist potential teams of researchers, knowledge-users and/or partners in working together to identify research questions or emerging issues and priorities that could form the basis of a grant application;

Please also note that primary research or primary data collection will not be supported through this funding opportunity. Any activity that may be perceived as such should be justified (e.g., surveying individuals for the purpose of the project).
Please see the Partner and Internal Collaborators Description section of this funding opportunity for details on funding levels and relevant research areas specific to each participating Institute/Initiative.

CIHR - Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH)
Summary/Relevance
- One of ICRH’s key targets is to enhance patient-engagement in health research and implement patient-engagement as a core priority in strategic initiatives. By integrating patients as partners in the development of research strategies and programs, ICRH’s research communities will lead the way in transformative patient-oriented research and benefit from patient involvement to improve the relevance and impact of research on health and well-being, clinical practice, and to contribute to more effective health services, policies and products.
- The CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH) will provide funding for Planning Grant applications that are determined to be relevant to ICRH’s mandate with a focus on patient-engagement in health research. Specifically, the primary goals of the planning meetings will be to bring patients, researchers and stakeholders together to develop strategies, programs and best practices tools that will allow patients to be true partners in research. It is recommended that these meetings be preceded by, include, or followed by an assessment of patient-determined outcomes for research in the given field, and should focus on, but not be limited to, the following discussion topics: active engagement of patients as co-builders in research planning and decision making, role of patients in designing research projects, patient-engagement plans in knowledge transfer activities, training of patients and researchers for optimal collaboration, etc.
