Downtown Winnipeg BIZ: Mingle - Your guide to everything downtown

Member Spotlight: Hue Shoe Repair

413 Graham Ave.

Hue Nguyen lives to make people happy. This is probably why the 65-year-old owner/operator of Hue (pronounced “hway”) Shoe Repair is known for more than his master cobbler skills – his smile, laugh and playful story-telling make him memorable.

Get him talking and he might tell you stories of his customers from around the world (as far as Japan) or immigrating to Canada from Vietnam in 1981. In fact, March 16, 2021 is Hue Shoe Repair’s 40th anniversary. When he first opened, his shop was inside The Bay building and now he’s just a few steps away on Graham Avenue.

“I came here, I stayed here. I live here,” Hue says about being a part of the downtown community. “I can’t get away because I love downtown.”

Take a look at the walls of Hue Shoe Repair and you’ll notice a few treasures in amongst the usual cobbler’s shoe cleaners and accessories – framed family photos, newspaper articles, a 2012 Downtown Winnipeg BIZ Achievement Award and two enormous old sewing machines.

By the name of the shop, you know he repairs shoes but those 60- and 40-year-old sewing machines can mend all sorts of leather goods from jackets to bags to belts. Frayed elastic on your Blunnies? Want waterproofing spray for your shoes (or tent)? Holes in the soles of your shoes? Need prescribed orthopedic adjustments? Hue has got you (and your feet) covered!

Visit Hue for a repair and he’s sure to put a bounce in your step.

Warming Huts v. 2021 features a winning Winnipeg design

warming huts

Something new popped up where the two rivers meet.

Warming Huts v. 2021 features outdoor attractions that are out of this world and close to home. This is the 11th year The Forks has asked for submissions from around the world and more than 150 international artists and architecture groups competed.

This year, one of the winning submissions is from Winnipeg company, AtLRG Architecture Inc. Hot Landing (in the middle of the image) extends a warm welcome to visitors from outer space while simultaneously looking familiar and otherworldly.

This year there’s a lot to look at and even a few interactive pieces that won’t stick around after the snow melts. Get down to see them before they are gone!
